    "Amazing Grace"

    These are the original verses of the song as written by John Newton in 1772.

    Photobucket

    The verse 'when we've been there ten thousand years' was originally printed in the book ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and does not come from the hymn even though it is now considered part of the song.

    Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
    That sav’d a wretch like me!
    I once was lost, but now am found,
    Was blind, but now I see.

    ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
    And grace my fears reliev’d;
    How precious did that grace appear,
    The hour I first believ’d!

    Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares,
    I have already come;
    ’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
    And grace will lead me home.

    The Lord has promis’d good to me,
    His word my hope secures;
    He will my shield and portion be,
    As long as life endures.

    Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
    And mortal life shall cease;
    I shall possess, within the veil,
    A life of joy and peace.

    The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
    The sun forbear to shine;
    But God, who call’d me here below,
    Will be forever mine.

    John Newton, Olney Hymns (London: W. Oliver, 1779)

    • John Newton was born in Wapping England in 1725 and had a difficult childhood he lacked moral self control and discipline. He was not at all religious. As a man he got a position as a slave buyer in Africa. Later he became Captain on slave ships.
    • He became a Christian in 1748 at the age of 23. This did not stop him trading in Slaves.
    • He was ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1764
    • It is thought that he penned the hymn, along with others, as part of an ongoing competition he had with another hymn writer William Cowper.
    • He only began to regret his part in the trading of slaves in 1780 eight years after penning Amazing Grace and thirty two years after his conversion to Christianity.

    A Birth A Death and An Audition

    Thursday 16th October
    A DAY TO REMEMBER!!

    At 2am this morning my daughter Sarah text me to say that she  would soon be going to the hospital to have her baby.
    I hadn't been to sleep as I was staying with my Aunt before going for my audition.
    I was finding it difficult to sleep in a bed I wasn't used to anyway but now I couldn't sleep at all.
    I was thinking about my baby having her second baby. My new grandchild.
    We didn't know what sex child she was having so it was really exciting.
    I was lying in bed convinced she was having a little girl.
    I kept reminding myself it might be a boy but I just knew it was going to be a girl.

    At 3.16am Sarah text me again to say they were just off to the hospital.
    So now i'm even more awake and feeling really hungry.
    I went downstairs to get myself a yogurt. I didn't know what to do with myself.

    I really wanted to sleep as I had to get up at 8 to start getting ready to go for my Audition for Britain's got Talent. This was the reason I was staying with my Aunt.
    She lives in Eltham SE London and the Audition was near Holborn so her house is only half hour away.
    She was lovely enough to say she would come and support me.
    It was gonna be a long day of hanging around waiting for my Audition slot.

    It was around 5am that Sarah finally text to announce the birth of my new beautiful granddaughter

    Chloe Anna was born at 3.54am, weighing 7lb 14oz.
    Birth was very quick and relatively easy.
    Sarah and Chris x

    Oh Bliss!  (I knew it was a girl)

    Chloe

    Baby Chloe Anna
    How wonderful is new life?

    Chloe Anna Megan Dickson

    I dreamed about you before you came
    I saw your face so clear
    I looked into your twinkling eyes
    And whispered in your ear

    I told you that I love you
    And I will make life grand
    I kissed your cheek, held you close
    And squeezed your tiny hand

    I ran my fingers through your hair
    And felt the softest curl
    I whispered 'I can't
    wait to meet you
    Darling baby girl.

    India Jones the ^S^ongfairy

    It still took me an hour to go to sleep and then I had the most awful dream

    But that's another story

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    My Aunt's alarm went off at 7am so that was the end of my nights sleep.I dragged myself out of bed at 8am to start getting ready for my audition

    The audition was held at
    The New Connaught Rooms, Great Queen Street, London
    Audition time 1300

     We got ready for our train journey to Charing Cross from Eltham. I had a bit of a practice and was working hard to control my nerves. By 10am we were ready to leave for the station.

    Goodbye Megan Hall

    My son rang me later in the day to tell me that at excactly this time my mother-in-law had passed away. We knew she was dying as she had been suffering from dementia and that recently her health had been deteriorating but I don't think either of us thought she would go so quickly.

    Photobucket            Photobucket

    We don't see her regularly as she is mother of my ex husband and lives in Kent. We had been to see her and my sisters-in-law in January though and I was very pleased about that. I was very fond of her and even though no longer with her son, still always regarded her as my mother-in-law.

    Photobucket

    We arrived at Great Queen Street at 11am and joined the queue. The queue was really short so we were glad and started chatting to the people around us. There is such a great atmosphere at auditions. It's great to chat with people whose aim is the same as yours. We were allowed to go into the building at 12 luckily because although the weather was dry it was cold in the shade and the young girl in front of me was going blue with the cold.

    Photobucket

    I had told everyone that I was gonna be singing for Simon Cowell as that is what happened the first year of Britain's Got Talent. Unfortunately the show is now so popular that they have so many people wanting an audition that you have to go through a selection audition to reduce the amount of people Simon and the judges have to see.
    So I was disappointed. Even more disappointed to know we were only going to be able to do a verse and a chorus.
    I had been expecting to do the whole of my song. I had decided to sing 'How Could An Angel Break My Heart'
    To hear my audition piece go to my mp3 player in the left hand column.

     * * * * * * * * * * *

    After registering you are divided into 6 groups and each group has a different audition room. In the room is one of the producers of the show and someone else on the camera. I had to wait until 5pm to be called to my audition and by this time was feeling weak and shaky. I hadn't eaten all day as I can't eat when I'm going to sing, and I had only had water to drink. Due to the hunger and nerves by the time I went in to sing I was shaking like a jelly and my vocal chords were paralysed with fear. lol.
    I am very proud to say however that dispite all that I sang my verse and chorus with good control and I was pleased with myself. I've never been good at auditions but each time I go to one I manage to do a little better. So one day my aim is to sing as well at audition as I do when I perform. I will not find out until at least January if I am chosen to go to the next round but i don't expect to be as I really didn't do well enough.

    Swan House Sandhurst 19 March

    This Week Started With St Patricks Day And Ended With Easter

    On Saturday I entertained at a private party at Woking Homes. They were celebrating ( or rather commiserating ) the result of the rugby match between Ireland and England. It was a great night and they were such a fun crowd.

    On Monday I was invited to St Christophers, Ascot Priory Nursing Home. We had a great afternoon. Everyone joined in the songs and loved the Irish theme. Irish folk songs are always so popular. I took along some tamborines and it added a new element to the show. Definately a success for us all.

    On Tuesday I entertained at Pinehurst, a Care Home in Crowthorne . I have been there before but not in quite a while. It was lovely to go back and I had a great time. Everyone was happy to sing along to some Irish songs and songs from yesteryear.

    SWAN HOUSE - SANDHURST

    On Wednesday I went for the first time to a sheltered housing complex called Swan House.

    Although its nearer to Easter than St Patricks day (just about) I went with the Irish theme.

    I formed a group to play the tamborines and it was a great laugh.

    The Photo's in the above album show what a great time we all had and how everyone joined in the singing.
